To Whom It May Concern,

My ultimate professional goal is to conduct pharmaceutical research to aid the fight against the global phenomenon of antibiotic resistance. I plan furthering my education through graduate school in the field of Chemistry, followed by eventually earning a doctorate degree in Chemistry. On average, I spend around eight hours per week in the laboratory, and I hope to soon drastically increase that amount of time by getting involved in research on campus next semester.

Collaboration and cooperation is as important in the lab, for safety reasons as well as for innovation, as it was in my summer research experience. I worked with Christopher Newport University’s Organismal and Environmental Biology department in order to document the migration patterns of Fundulus heteroclitus.  I had the privilege of learning how to anesthetize and perform minimally invasive surgical procedures on the fish from Dr. Jessica Thompson and several graduate students.

I also have experience working in fast paced environments such as the restaurant that I have been employed at for nearly three years, Second Street American Bistro, Williamsburg. In order to be successful there, I had to adapt to think quickly on my feet and to be as diplomatic as possible, as patrons are often not the politest when interacting with service and hospitality workers. I have also been trusted to personally train eight new employees since I started working there.

In the past, I have given back to the community by helping high school students practice public speaking in order to foster creativity and self confidence, judging invitational and league public speaking competitions where I give constructive feedback to performing students. I have also assistant directed children’s summer camp productions. I believe in introducing students to the sciences early on to cultivate understanding and appreciation. I also believe that exposure to the arts along with practice presenting oneself in front of an audience can be critical to forming skills needed to be successful in life.

I ask that you consider me for admission, and would be delighted to hear from you. If you have any questions, or would like to request an interview, I can be reached at (757)-784-7791. Thank you for your time and attention.

Respectfully,

Casey S. O’Neil
